Surveying commuters in Stellenbosch
The accompanying survey targets people who commute in Stellenbosch, regardless of mode, purpose or frequency.
It seeks to identify commuters’ preferences and characteristics. It also aims to find the barriers and facilitators for cycling in the Stellenbosch area.
This survey is a relevant component of a sustainability research project developed for the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) developed by United Nations University and University of Tokyo. The core objective is to assess the plausible impact of a Dockless Bicycle Sharing System in Stellenbosch.

Get the latest version of our Stellenbosch Cycling Map now
The second version (December 2017) of our Stellenbosch Cycling Map is now available in print and in electronic format. The latest version of the map features a far more detailed town map and is aimed at tourists and local commuters who would like to discover the town and surrounding areas on city bikes.
The historic town centre of Stellenbosch, the university campus, many neighbourhoods as well as the route along the Eerste River are flat areas and ideal for easy, smooth cycling.
For the more adventurous biker, there are several good reasons why Stellenbosch, with a network of some 500 km of trials, is the mountain bike capital of South Africa. Some of the access routes to mountain bike routes are easily accessible as scenic routes.
Copies of the map are available at all local cycle shops, Stellenbosch 360 in Market Street, hotels and guesthouses or download the latest electronic version.
It’s Bike to Work and School Week in Stellenbosch in October
In October we would like to see even more people on bikes. From 16 to 20 October it will again be Bike to Work and School Week in Stellenbosch.
During this week we encourage everyone to cycle to work and leave their cars at home. If you don’t have a bike, borrow or rent one, it is so easy.
The more people ride their bikes, the safer our roads will become, which will also help us to convince the authorities to attend to our request for safer cycle routes. Cycling is far cheaper than driving a car, and even faster if you live 8-10 km from your workplace, plus parking is free.
Rather breathe in fresh air than sit in a traffic jam. When you arrive at work, you will also be in a far better mood.
Get on your bike! It is fun and healthy
Why you should explore Stellenbosch by bike
The historic town centre of Stellenbosch and many of its neighbourhoods are flat and ideal for easy, smooth cycling.
Once you have discovered the joy of cycling here, it is difficult to get back into a car again. Just ask any resident or student on a bike. Discover the best and safest routes and you will be on your way.
Few people know that there are safe cycle paths along the Eerste River all the way through town. On this route you can reach a number of destinations and experience the beauty of the tranquil river and view the majestic surrounding mountains. There is also a safe cycle path up the Jonkershoek Valley.
One of the great advantages of cycling in Stellenbosch is that you can stop anywhere to shop, have coffee, visit a museum, attend a meeting or talk to friends because you have no parking problems! And you will never have a problem with traffic jams.
One tip: be attentive to some uninitiated motorists – they must keep 1m away from you by law.

Stellenbosch Bike to Work and School week 2016
10 – 14 October 2016
We want to encourage commuters, including their employers, to leave their cars at home for one week and cycle to work.
Celebrate our town’s second Bike to Work week, help us to encourage even more cyclists to hop on their bikes this year.
Waarom moet jy fiets ry werk toe?
Why cycle to work?
- It is healthy and you are more productive at work
